Chiefi — Runnin’ Circles (YouTube, 2012)
haven’t burned in a while and this video mercifully spins in the opposite direction of the room. should also check out his mixtape that makes the trap/metal relationship a bit more explicit.
CHiEFi’s from East Atlanta and at its best (e.g. “Do I Give Uh Fuck No”) this EP has this great punk/crunk energy that kinda reminds you of a cassette-warped Mystikal circa-Ghetto Fabulous. Also check out this tape he put out last month with some of the other people in the Billion Dollar Circle orbit (Hard Nard, Sonny Karson, etc.).
Chiefi’s madman rap holler definitely shares the same pitch and range as Mystikal, but isn’t nearly as nimble; Not sure if that’s what you meant by “cassette-warped” but it seems about right? The more polished, familiar Justice League sound seemed a bit of a mismatch on Oragami Talk, but a mixtape that opens with a straight read of a psalm coupled with the opening line of “NIGGA I’M A GOD” on a track called “I’m A God” is a mixtape best left to its own devices without much criticism. And why bother when the whole BDC crew just dropped a new mixtape that’s really great.
